more recent analyses of cloud seeding effects, along with improvements in technology for delivering and targeting of cloud treatments, produced scientific evidence that the North Dakota Cloud Modification Project has been effective in reducing hail damage in target areas (Smith et al. , , ).

Cloud physics and cloud seeding. by Louis J. Battan Download PDF EPUB FB2

I've bought/read several textbooks, and when I was looking at others I found this little book. It was first published inwhich worried me a bit since it means that some of the information is out of date or incomplete. This book is still a good introduction to cloud physics, cloud formation, cloud condensation nuclei, and ice nuclei.4/4(1).

In this book, Dr. Battan tells how the meteorologist collects and analyzes data to increase his understanding of atmospheric phenomena. He explains the structure and growth of clouds from minute condensation nuclei to the familiar cloud forms, and he describes the formation of rain, snow, and hail.

Battan believes that the findings of meteorological research will not only lead to more Author: Louis J. Battan. Read this book on Questia. Cloud Physics and Cloud Seeding by Louis J. Battan. Cloud physics and cloud seeding. book is a cataloging and social networking site for booklovers3/5. It is an understatement to say that people are confused about cloud seeding. While it has been called "the crime of the century" and outlawed in Pennsylvania, the governments of the dry, western part of the United States continue to spend tax revenues on cloud seeding to increase water supplies.

During the past five years, I have talked with officials responsible for decisions regarding cloud Cited by: Cloud seeding is a type of weather modification that aims to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds by dispersing substances into the air that serve as cloud condensation or ice nuclei, which alter the microphysical processes within the usual intent is to increase precipitation (rain or snow), but hail and fog suppression are also widely practised in.

In addition to its value to students of meteorology, Cloud Physics offers readers outside the classroom a nontechnical and informativeview of the nature of precipitation and clouds.

Title: Weather Technology. (Book Reviews: Cloud Physics and Cloud Seeding; Radar Observes the Weather) Book Authors: Battan, Louis J. Review Author. Roughly the first two-thirds of the book covers the known science, beginning with basic thermodynamics of gases and extending to cloud physics, atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric aerosols, atmospheric-oceanic circulation and coupling, fluid dynamics, radiation absorption, emission, and scattering, the solar radiation spectrum, and thermal.

Cloud Seeding - Dick LaRosa InDoubleday published a book by Louis J. Battan titled "Cloud Physics and Cloud Seeding". InDover republished it unabridged, but changed the title to "Cloud Physics: a popular introduction to applied meteorology". Cloud seeding, deliberate introduction into clouds of various substances that act as condensation nuclei or ice nuclei in an attempt to induce precipitation.

Although the practice has many advocates, including national, state, and provincial government officials, some meteorologists and atmospheric scientists question its effectiveness.

An article in Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, takes a look. Janet Pelley, a contributing editor at C&EN, reports that for cloud seeding science to come into its own, it needs to address some major challenges.

The goal of cloud seeding is to alter the natural development of the cloud to enhance precipitation, suppress hail, dissipate fog or reduce lightning. History of cloud seeding: Rainmaking has its roots in when American scientists Vincent Schaefer and Bernard Vonnegu at General Electric (GE) successfully seeded a cloud with dry ice and got.

Artificial Rain or Cloud Seeding. Experiments were conducted in Australia and America to produce rain artificially from clouds which would have not rained at all. For artificial rain suitable cloud with top to Km below the freezing level are suitable.

A method of artificial rainmaking by scattering silver iodide or other finely divided particles into clouds to serve as nuclei for raindrops. The atmospheric conditions, in terms of humidity, etc., should be conducive for cloud formation for cloud seeding to be effective.

Cloud physics has achieved such a voluminous literature over the past few decades that a significant quantitative study of the entire field would prove unwieldy.

This book concentrates on one major aspect: cloud microphysics, which involves the processes that lead to the formation of individual cloud and precipitation particles.

• the scientific foundation for weather and climate modification by cloud seeding. This book will be invaluable for researchers and advanced students engaged in cloud and aerosol physics, and air pollution and climate Size: KB.

Cloud seeding is quite expensive, though potentially cheaper than other projects, like diverting rivers, building new canals or improving irrigation systems. Then again, the allure of cloud seeding may redirect attention and funding from other projects that could be more promising.

Then there are questions about altering weather. Unfortunately, this book can't be printed from the OpenBook. If you need to print pages from this book, we recommend downloading it as a PDF. Visit to get more information about this book, to buy it in print, or to download it as a free PDF.

How cloud seeding works. Credit: Cloud seeding. Humans interfering with mother nature to bring us more of the good stuff. It sounds too good to be true, but studies point to a snowfall increase of % during an entire season, and a Summit Daily news article lists 10% as an average increase, reports meteorologist and powder reporter Joel Gratz of but can also be called the longwave cloud radiative effect, or longwave cloud radiative forcing.

Globally and annually averaged the effect is about 25 Wm 2, thereby offsetting by about half the effect of cooling due to the cloud albedo effect. Ironically modern interest in cloud physics is also influenced by a desire (not shared by this author) to.

For cloud seeding, it is more effective to inject the seed crystals from the air, and we anticipate that radar will be used to guide unmanned aircraft to the correct seeding position.

Fog can be cleared from the ground, and it should be possible to develop a simple device that could be used to.
